A Little Help From A Friend

As I have experience a great start in my new career, I ask you for a little help. I am looking for people who want are wanting to sell their home, buy a new home, buy their first home and/or invest. Right now there are some great properties on the market and the interest rates are still extremely low. Many people think they need 20% down to buy and that just ain’t so. Everyday I am able to get people lined up with great financing with a small amount of out of pocket expense. If you would cut and paste the following to an email and send it to 10 of your closest contacts, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance.

My Path To Being a Realtor

FullSizeRender 3

I was and am called to ministry. I know I am. (I also know I AM!) When circumstances prevailed for me to pursue another way to provide for my family, I searched LinkedIn, Monster, USAJobs, AmeriCorp, UAJobs, City Jobs and more. I promise it was more. Nothing! Absolutely nothing!! I did get an interview at Lowe’s but did not get the call back. With a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees I was not qualified for anything.

Two years earlier I could see the storm clouds rising and thought of becoming a REALTOR. I grew up around construction,  real estate sales, was president of Concrete Cutters and Breakers (a construction and demolition company) so I have knowledge of Tuscaloosa and housing. So about a year ago I began my pursuit to get my real estates sales license. Those who are closest to me, especially my prayer group, knew my heart was not in it. Why? I know I am called to ministry. I never ceased pastoring and founded One Church Tuscaloosa with some great people and that continues today. I never wanted to do anything else. However, life demanded that I do.

Ministry found me or I found ministry in being a REALTOR. Being able to help people with one of the biggest decisions of their life and most likely the biggest financial decision of their life, ministry happens. It is not in a sermon. It is not in a lesson. It is in hands on helping people find the right home. Seeing someone for the first time be able to buy a home when they never thought it possible is ministry. Seeing a boy run through a back yard and ask his mom, “Can we make this our home?”, is ministry. I have not sold any big homes with great commissions but I have been able to help some people find their first home that they could call their own. It is ministry!! I love people and to see the joy in their eyes is very fulfilling. To help them put a plan in place to achieve a dream is ministry. I have found my voice in my vocational calling.

I am in ministry as a pastor.

I am in ministry as a REALTOR.

I can now say with the same passion that I love being a pastor and I love being a REALTOR.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV)

Coffeehouse Worship

1st Worship @ HH

I have gathered with the church in many environments in different countries and in diverse situations. However, this past Sunday was the first time I had gathered with the church for praise, prayer, preaching, giving and more in a local coffeeshop. Sitting around tables with friends and family over a cup of coffee and food is often what Jesus did (maybe not coffee but I think they might have). One of our best local coffeeshops, Heritage House Coffee & Tea, in Tuscaloosa rents us some space to gather. We turn a coffeehouse into a house of prayer and praise. It was refreshing. It felt real. It was amazing. When we gather in the name of Jesus, He does some amazing stuff. One Church Tuscaloosa is going to continue to gather in this fashion and I am so excited to see how Jesus is taking people deeper in His love.

We would love for you to be our guest. We gather for coffee, food and conversation at 10 and we begin our praise & worship at 10:30. Go look around our website to learn more about One Church Tuscaloosa. Be our friend on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

God Said, “Start a church!”

I have had people ask me a short question that really has a simple short answer. In fear of oversimplification here is how it goes:

Question: “Why did you start a new church?”

Answer: “God said to!”

The Calvinist would say, “He did not have a choice but to start a church. It was predestined to happen.”

The Armenian would say, “He made a clear spiritual decision to start a church.”

Well, I agree with both of those and I am not sure how all that works and neither am I interested in debating it with anyone. While I was reading Ephesians one day God gave me a clear direction to start a church and for it to be named “One Church” while I added “Tuscaloosa”. Again you see the mix of me and God, mostly God. God does His work. I get to participate. God has demonstrated His infinite love for me and my family of which I can never repay, nor does He desire that I try. So, God is starting a church in Tuscaloosa called One Church. You ask, “What is One Church about?” It is about Jesus – making much of Jesus. Just take the time to read Ephesians 1:1-14. Paul knew how to make much of Jesus. We will seek to reach into our communities culture and lift up Jesus – make much of Jesus.  We believe that if we make much of Jesus, He will draw people to Himself. We seek to partner in making much of Jesus around the world. We simply want to do the works of God which is to believe in Him whom He as sent. (ref. John 6:29)

7 Truths & You: In light of the Testimony of Olivia Mills

In light of this past week and the testimony of Olivia Mills I want to share with you 7 truths I learned years ago in study called Experiencing God1 by Henry Blackaby, and give a brief explanation. I did not know Olivia but I know the Jesus she represented and have seen His work this week. Here is what I have learned.

  1. God is always at work around you. This week there is no doubt God has been working around you, our community, our state and to many countries around the world. John 5:17 Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
  2. God pursues a continuing love relationship with you that is real and personal. God has opened your eyes to see Him in pursuit of you and our entire community. Matthew 22:37–38 (ESV) And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment.
  3. God invites you to become involved with Him in His work. You have been praying and seeking God because He invited you to join Him in what He wants to do in Tuscaloosa County.  John 14:21 (ESV) Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
  4. God speaks by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and the church to reveal Himself, His purposes and His ways. Through the circumstances of this week the Holy Spirit has screamed out – follow Jesus. John 8:47 (ESV) Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
  5. God’s invitations for you to work with Him always leads you to a crisis of belief that requires faith and action. You will have a hard time believing how God want to use you in this. You will feel inadequate and unprepared. Move forward with faith and action in abandon to Jesus. Hebrews 11:6 (ESV) And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
  6. You must make major adjustments in your life to join God in what He is doing. Going with God always requires major adjustments in your life. Be obedient and adjust your priorities, agenda, plans to God and His plan. Luke 14:33 (ESV) So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
  7. You come to know God by experience as you obey Him and He accomplishes His work through you. As you obey Him, you will get to know Him in amazing ways as He works through you. John 14:23 (ESV) Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

Alabama vs. LSU

I have lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama all my life. Those almost 49 years have seen many Alabama games both live and on TV. As a child I would cry at the losses and don’t remember the emotions of the games we won. I guess I hate losing more than I love winning. I remember the championships from the 70’s through 2009. I remember “The Bear” and the legacy he left Alabama as a winner. However, I never remember a regular season game with the hype of this game. There have been some big ALA vs AUB games as recently as last year but not the hype. The hype has become bigger than the game. ESPN should have had and ALA/LSU channel the past two weeks. The tragedy is that there can only be one winner. However, I think the loser will probably grow more in character or at least they will have more to work with. But is there one of us who is more concerned about character than a win. I know I just don’t want to cry. ROLL TIDE ROLL.
